Stress is defined as the force experienced per unit area (or) The amount of push and pull force applied over a cross sectional area right angle to the action of force is called stress.

Strain is defined as the ratio of change in length to original length (or) The ratio of change in dimension to the original dimension is called strain (or) the deformation due to the effect of applied force is called Strain.

 the effect of applied force is referred to as Stress, and the resulting deformation is the Strain.
