Why do Ethernet cable have 8 wires?

More common was to run phone wires to pin 4 and 5, so that you could plug either an analog phone or an Ethernet cable into the wall, and either would work. With 1000 Mbits/sec (what's most common today), the protocol uses all 8 wires for a single connection, and there's no more of these fun and games.

To get to Gigabit, we wanted to keep the data signalling rate the same, so the higher bandwidth required more wires
